Moonlight - 10 weeks later

Time has come for a summary of the first ten weeks that Moonlight had spent on the AppStore. I present the amount of downloads and all user reviews posted on the AppStore. I promise to take a heroic attempt at not bragging too much.

User reviews

Reviews are presented without user nicknames for their privacy's sake. Of course, nothing forbids you from visiting iTunes Store and checking them out. Reviews are listed chronologically. Ratings on AppStore range from 1 to 5.

No cheating!

Reviews were collected using the App Annie service. Above you can count 15 5-star reviews and 4 4-star reviews, giving a solid average of 4.8. I guess there aren't many apps with such a high average rate at this stage of AppStore life cycle, which makes me very proud.

Despite what you might think, I didn't just pick few most pleasing reviews - the listing above contains a complete set of them. Moonlight might consider itself lucky for not getting even a single low-rating review to date. I guess my previous project, Sky Blue, was the app that got most of the frustrated users' attention as it got some seriously unjustified 1-star reviews (and some justified too). But not this time.

One might think it has something to do with Moonlight being a free app. Well, it doesn't. On the contrary, you can find many opinions on the internet that free apps tend to get more random 1-star reviews than paid ones. I was warried it will be the same with Moonlight but thanfully, it was not.

How come?

Well, after my first app got caught in the mixed review hell, I did at least two things when developing and releasing Moonlight that helped it get that part right.

First, I've avoided serious design flaws of Sky Blue, most important being the over-complicated usage and navigation. Moonlight allows to access most important functions with one touch and many others with just one more. At the same time, the interface is elegant and uncluttered. As an effect, Moonlight offers much more than Sky Blue, despite being simpler and more pleasing to use.

Second, I've worked a little harder on the advertisements, trying to better target end users. Many users of Sky Blue were disappionted by the app because they just didn't want their weather app to play music or present 3D sky. And of course, they almost never read the app description. The 3D part was also rectified to just serve as a nice addition and not the main feature. This way it just can't bring disappointment, only a nice surprise for those who don't take AppStore screenshots seriously.

Downloaded units

After ten weeks, Moonlight got 18 000 downloads. Its a half of Sky Blue downloads, but Sky Blue was backed up by much more money put into AdMob and got some extra downloads after transitioning from paid to free (about 15k). Currently, without a single penny spent on advertisement Sky Blue get a solid 200 downloads a day.

Just kidding, there won't be any conclusionary bragging here so you'll have to interpret these numbers yourself. I'm just providing them.

More than everything, I want to thank all the users of Moonlight for their support. Special thanks go to those who took their time to write some e-mails with detailed feedback from the app usage. Thanks and see you soon on the AppStore!
